Kent Charugundla & Tamarind Art Present 50 Years of Bal Chhabda : Thursday, May 4, 2006, 5:30-8:30 PM, TamarindArt LLC, 142 East 39th Street, New York City--TamarindArt hosts Opening Night for "50 Years of Bal Chhabda: Paintings in New York," an incredible exhibition of over half a century of never-before-seen works, embodying a generation of Abstract Expressionist aspirations. The exhibition is Chhabda's FIRST in the United States, and only the third solo show of his prolific career. Highlights of the exhibition, all personally selected by the artist, include: Crucifixion, 1963 and Triptych, 1972. Chhabda is the quintessential figure of the Progressive Artists Group, keeping company with such important Indian contemporary artists as Akbar Padamsee, S.H. Raza, Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, Krishen Khanna, Souza, Ramkumar and his friend and mentor, M.F. Husain. Although Chhabda began painting in 1958, he refused to sell or exhibit his works for almost 30 years. Since then, both Chhabda's solo shows in India have been sell-outs, with most of the paintings being spoken for before the exhibitions even opened. This show is unique as it is perhaps the last time the public will have the opportunity to see such a large body of Chhabda's early works under one roof. The EXHIBIT IS NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC through June 24th. Gallery hours are 11 AM to 6 PM Tuesday to Friday and Saturday 12 PM – 6 PM. PERSONAL & MEDIA INQUIRIES: This is an unusual opportunity to meet and speak with the legendary artist.
