The Marrow Foundation, National Marrow Donor Program Celebrate ‘Creating Connections, Saving Lives’ Gala in New York City : Thursday, September 28, 2006, 6:30 PM, Cipriani 42nd Street, 110 East 42nd Street, New York City. Marrow Miracle: Wisconsin Girl Meets Life-Saving New York Donor--- The Marrow Foundation, National Marrow Donor Program Celebrate ‘Creating Connections, Saving Lives’ Gala in New York City: The reception and dinner celebrated the life-saving work of The Marrow Foundation and the National Marrow Donor Program. Who: Recipient Kristina Schultz, 9, Marshall, Wis. | Donor Shannon Behrhof, 27 Moriches Center, N.Y. Special Guest: Jazz Artist Keiko Matsui Diagnosed on her fourth birthday with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Kristina underwent 3 1/2 years of chemotherapy treatment and was doing well until she relapsed in March 2005. When she was first diagnosed, the family was told there was no match for her on the Registry. Kristina's mother is a principal of an elementary school, and at the time the district where she was working organized a drive in Kristina's honor to recruit people to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry. The Marrow Foundation's Hendrick Marrow Program sponsored one such drive. Kristina received her transplant at University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital a week before her birthday Aug. 13, 2005. She has participated in fundraisers for the hospital. When she grows up she would like to be a bone marrow transplant doctor. She has one younger sister, Hannah, age 6. Parents are Lori and Daryl Schultz. Shannon joined the NMDP Registry in March 2000 at a drive for a local boy in need of a transplant. The day that Shannon was notified that she was a match for a little girl in need of a life-saving transplant, she and her husband (of less than one year) found out that he had aggressive prostate cancer. Shannon's donation experience gave her family something positive to focus on during a difficult time. A poignant moment in the evening was when 9-year old Kristina Schulz met her donor, 27 year old Shannon Behrhof or Moriches Center, N.Y for the first time. Kristina’s speech was thoughtful, gracious and paid homage to her donor and the program which saved her life. By the time she was done, there was not a dry eye in the house which reminded this observer that absent the charity of certain individuals others would not exist. On this special evening a 9 year old reminded me why I started covering the New York Charity scene to begin with. Little people with big hearts and big deeds are the very essence or core of life and community. THANK YOU Kimberly Fields, Courtney Hurd and Kathleen Giordano for connecting me with this special evening. Background: Each year, 35,000 children and adults in the United States are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia. For many of these patients, a marrow or blood cell transplant is the only chance for a cure. Such a transplant is possible only when the patient and donor have matching tissue types. Seventy percent of the patients in need must search for an unrelated donor. Phipps Houses Annual Community Builder Awards Gala : Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Cipriani 42nd Street, New York City--Phipps Houses Annual Community Builder Awards Gala. Phipps Houses, the largest non-profit provider of affordable housing in New York City, tonight honored two individuals whose work contributes significantly to building strong communities. Adam Weinstein, president and CEO of Phipps Houses, presented awards to Bryce Blair, chairman and CEO of AvalonBay Communities, Inc. and Richard Paul Richman, chairman and founder of The Richman Group, Inc. at the annual Phipps Houses Community Builder Awards Gala. Emmy award-winning anchor and WNBC correspondent Jane Hanson emceed the gala at Cipriani 42nd Street. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in attendance. The event raised an estimated $850,000 that will benefit Phipps Community Development Corporation (Phipps CDC), the not-for-profit educational, social and human services arm of Phipps Houses. AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is among the nation’s largest and leading apartment Real Estate Investment Trusts and was Phipps Houses’ lead partner in the redevelopment of the Cooper Square Urban Renewal Area. The Richman Group, Inc. a long-time developer, owner and financier of mixed-use and mixed-income housing, has been an active participant in housing financed with the low-income housing tax credit, and has been an equity partner with Phipps Houses on nearly 400 units of affordable housing. “At Phipps Houses we have always believed in advancing both housing and community building. AvalonBay Communities and The Richman Group, under the extraordinary leadership of Bryce Blair and Richard Paul Richman, have been strong partners in providing much-needed affordable housing to New York City. Proceeds from tonight’s dinner will allow Phipps CDC to continue providing educational, career development, technology and other vital programs to our residents,” said Mr. Weinstein. “I’d also like to salute Mayor Bloomberg for his visionary leadership in expanding the City's investment in the affordable housing. And on behalf of Phipps Houses, we thank the many federal, state and local officials who are so critical to both our human services programs and bricks and mortar development.” Dinner co-chairs included Robert C. Dinerstein, Greenberg Traurig, LLC; Joel I. Picket, Gotham Construction Company, LLC; and Frederick S. Harris of AvalonBay Communities, Inc. Bronx Music Works provided musical entertainment. Funds raised by the dinner will support Phipps CDC’s youth and family development programs in the Bronx and Manhattan. These programs – including a new “West Farmers’ Market” and community garden, excellent Head Start centers and after-school / summer programs, GED, ESL and college preparation classes, community greening internships, job readiness assistance and senior programming – serve an estimated 5,500 children and adults each year, and meet pressing community needs. Phipps Houses was created in 1905 with a gift of $1 million dollar by Henry Phipps to build housing affordable to low-income families. Henry Phipps believed providing safe and sanitary housing to low-income wage earners would enhance their ability to take advantage of the City's economic opportunities. Over the past 101 years, Phipps Houses has evolved into a major affordable housing provider, property manager, and leader in community-based educational, vocational and social services. Phipps’ affordable housing assets exceed $1 billion, serving the housing and service needs of 45,000 New Yorkers. Today, Phipps Houses provides housing for 4,300 families in its own properties, and another 9,000 under management for other housing owners. With a development pipeline of 500 new apartments a year, Phipps continues to build and preserve affordable housing to give more families the needed framework of a safe and well maintained home. Nicole Miller Olympus Fashion Week Spring 2007 Fashion Show : Friday, September 8, 2006, The Promenade at Bryant Park's Tents, 6th Avenue between 40th & 42nd Streets, New York City--Nicole Miller's Spring 2007 Fashion Show: On opening day of Olympus Fashion Week from seat H-7-10 I watched the fashion show of legendary New York Fashion designer and American Fashion Icon Nicole Miller and afterwards went backstage. This was the first fashion show attended under the tents by Christopher London and appropriately it was that of Nicole Miller. Before I knew anything about fashion, I became aware of Nicole Miller. In 1987 my first "hip" tie purchase was a black Nicole Miller design which I wore with a Brooks Brothers suit. While I find the glitzy and glamourous world of High Fashion somewhat intimidating to say the least, Nicole Miller embodies all that is wonderful and special about the New York Fashion Industry. Nicole is also very active philanthropically with some of New York's and the Hamptons most important charitable organizations. Her soulful and accomodating demeanor and creative and engaging designs make Nicole Miller and her designs the choice of many leading ladies of high society, who frankly can choose to wear anything and they often choose Nicole Miller. Nicole's designs, however, like the designer are not intended only for High Society. Her designs have remained timely and fresh for two decades (1986-2006)with wide appeal across a broad cross section of the female population. From my vantage point it seemed like the most beautiful, ecletic and diverse array of New Yorkers, including a who's who of high society, younger and older, gathered under this tent to witness and celebrate the designs of Nicole Miller. Under the Tents in Bryant Park on this opening day of Olympus Fashion Week, I learned and witnessed first hand how fashion is very much a spectator sport in New York City. After leaving the tents I headed to Capitale located on the Bowery's Lower East Side to capture the fashion show of her protege, Nicole Romano who like Nicole Miller received her training at the world famous Rhode Island School of Design, otherwise known simply as RISD(pronounced "Rizdy").
