The Central Park Conservancy Opens The Peter Jay Sharp Children's Glade on Earth Day : Sunday, April 22, 2007, 11:00 a.m., The Peter Jay Sharp Children’s Glade, a newly designed area at the Great Hill in Central Park, located between 103rd and 106th Streets, New York City. The new woodland edge landscape includes a series of intimate glades, sitting areas, and connecting woodland paths, evoking rural pleasures and adventures for Park visitors. The Children’s Glade landscape and its ongoing maintenance were made possible by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation and its directors, including Cynthia and Dan Lufkin and Liliane and Norman Peck. At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Earth Day, Adrian Benepe, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Douglas Blonsky, President of the Central Park Conservancy and Central Park Administrator, Dan Lufkin with his daughter Skyler Lufkin and Norman Peck, champions of art in the Park, officially cut the ribbon (West 106th Street entrance to Central Park) while a brass quintet from The Juilliard School provided festive musical backdrop. Storytelling took place throughout the afternoon, in conjunction with other Earth Day activities on the Great Hill. Along with the landscape restoration, the Conservancy will inaugurate a new family program entitled A Clearing in the Forest, which uses nature as a backdrop to provide arts and cultural programming for families, appropriate for children ages 4 to 13. With small, open lawns and natural stone seating, the Children’s Glade is the perfect natural auditorium for storytelling, music, dance, and theater workshops. As part of A Clearing in the Forest, cultural programming will take place throughout the season at the Great Hill (West 103rd to 106th Streets). "It’s The Peter Jay Sharp Children’s Glade. And what we did is take an unused wooden landscape and redefined it so its an area that now families can come with children and we’re actually going to be programming it with storytelling and dance and theatre and its all amongst beautiful, native plant material," explained Central Park Conservancy President Douglas Blonsky. "So it’s also about teaching kids about the environment, as well." PHOTO CREDIT: ©Manhattan Society.com 2007 by Christopher London | tel:Private |e-mail: ChrisLondon@manhattansociety.com

Around Town with Manhattan Society.com's Celebrity Photographer Steve Mack : APRIL 2007, Around Town with Manhattan Society.com's Celebrity Photographer, Steve Mack. Notes from the trail by Steve Mack----->The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was a media frenzy. The event was broadcast live from the Waldorf Astoria. A singer for Van Halen, Sammy Hagar holds the award proudly in his arms. Due to creative differences with the event planners, David Lee Roth was not in attendance. In an interview a few years ago, asked what the difference was between him and Sammy Hagar, Roth is quoted as saying 'he (Hagar) is a singer... I am THE singer.' When you look at Jeff Goldblum leaving Live with Regis and Kelly, he has the polish and style that we remember of the big Hollywood Stars of yesterday. Goldblum graciously takes time to sign autographs and even takes some direction and poses without missing a beat. I keep running into Anna Wilding. As a photographer it amazes me that she remembers our names. She is an Actress and Director. She recently produced the new critically acclaimed feature documentary BUDDHA WILD MONK IN THE HUT. Mariska Hargitay, well known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson in Law & Order SVU is also the daughter of Mickey Hargitay, winner of the 1955 Mr. Universe title. After getting a desperate phone call to cover Gotham Magazine's party celebrating Mariska Hargitay on the March 2007 cover, I arrived just in time to catch her in a private moment away from the crowd where she posed for me while waiting to be seated for dinner. USA Network paraded a host of returning characters this season at The Modern in New York. WWE super star John Cena hams it up with Tony Shalhoub while Gigi Grazer, Dule Hill, Anthony Michael Hall and Corbin Bernsen look on and then join in the photo frenzy. Broadway openings are like reunions. The Opening Night of Eugene O'Neill's A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN at The Brooks Atkinson Theatre was no exception with the likes of Melissa Gilbert, the announcer guy from the movies, Don LaFontaine who actually critiqued my voice over reel a few monts ago (He was pleased that we finally met), Matt Dillon, Neil Simon and Jamie Gregory with Somers Farkas. Kevin Spacey co-stars with Eve Best. I arrived for the Premiere of PERFECT STRANGER at the Ziegfield Theater. There must have been 100 photographers in three rows. My head was touching the top of the tent as I balanced on a ladder in an attempt to get perfect pictures of a rather perfect looking Halle Berry. Bruce Willis appeared somewhat overwhelmed by all the camera strobes flashing all at once. At one point he paused, turned his back to us as he regained his composure only to endure more of the same. Armand Assante is simply debonair, arriving to the Order of Redemption wrap party at Marquee. Michael Imperioli's band, La Dolce Vita performed at the Athletes for Charity Art Exhibit, Silent Auction & Birthday Celebration for Jay Galvin at Slate Plus at 54 west 21st Street. The Twelfth Annual Gen Art Film Festival, presented by Acura, will closed on Tuesday, April 17th at Clearview's Chelsea West Theater (333 West 23rd Street) with the New York premiere of "He Was a Quiet Man," with Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert, Shamika Cotton and Sascha Knopf. Now let's go back to Live with Regis and Kelly where we run into actress Jane Krakowski who is in a rush, yet very accomodating stopping for some quick shots outside the ABC studio. Rule number one... when you're looking for a parking spot at pier 60, take care not to run over any of the guests attending the RIVERKEEPER'S Benefit Gala honoring the Hearst Corporation. When members of the Kennedy or Hearst families are in attendance, you can count on group shots. Everyone wants to be photographed with them. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Daphne Zuniga, Donna Karen, Amanda Hearst and Lenny Kravitz were among the attendees. Food Allergy Initiative's Spring Luncheon : Tuesday, April 17, 2007, Cipriani 42nd Street, New York City, New York. The FOOD ALLERGY Initiative's Spring Luncheon. FAI'S MISSION: The Food Allergy Initiative(FAI) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that raises funds toward the effective treatment and cure for food allergies. Food allergies differ from other allergies because a minuscule amount of the wrong food can be fatal. Today, it is estimated that 11,000,000 Americans are affected by food allergies, 30,000 visit emergency rooms, and hundreds die each year. FAI is the first organization dedicated to a strategic, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to food allergies. Our program is designed to help the millions of children and adults who live in fear of eating the wrong food with every bite they take. Funds raised by FAI are invested in research that seeks to find a cure and improve clinical treatment. FAI has established a Medical Advisory Board to identify and recommend the most promising research in the United States and around the world. FAI also provides grants to entities that serve and support food allergic patients and their families at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. In addition, it is FAI's mission to raise public awareness about the seriousness of food allergies. Through effective educational programs and public information, FAI heightens awareness of food allergies and the danger of anaphylaxis among the media, health care workers, education and child care professionals, while also working with the nation’s policy makers to create a safer environment and improve care for the food allergic population.
