FIAF: Trophée des Arts Gala | 07 : Tuesday, November 27, 2007, GOTHAM HALL 1356 Broadway, New York, NY. The Trophée des Arts Gala was an elegant evening which provided attendees with a delightful night of fine dining and gracious company in a magical setting. This annual Gala raises funds to support the cultural and educational programs of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) while also promoting a better understanding between the French and American peoples. This year, friends of FIAF and their guests honored award-winning director James Ivory with the 2007 Trophée des Arts. Mr. Ivory, for over forty years at the head of Merchant-Ivory Productions, has created an unparalleled collection of independent films esteemed world wide for their beauty and quality. His pictures frequently celebrate being a foreigner in a foreign land, and often, as in the landmark film Jefferson in Paris and A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries, his lens has captured the French spirit and beguiled audiences with his sensitive portrayal of La Belle France. The gala featured a sneak preview of Ivory's upcoming "The City of Your Final Destination" based upon a book by Peter Cameron, his first film since the death of his long-time partner Ismail Merchant Established in 1992, the Trophée des Arts is awarded each year to a distinguished artist or cultural icon whose career exemplifies our organization’s mission of French-American friendship and cross-cultural exchange. In previous years, this recognition has been bestowed on luminaries such as Catherine Deneuve, Jessye Norman, Christian Lacroix and last year’s honoree, Charlie Rose. The Pilier d’Or recognizes a leading business figure, diplomat or philanthropist for outstanding contributions to the French American Community. The 2007 Pilier d'Or honors Pierre Bellon, Chairman of the Board & Founder of Sodexho, the world leader in food & management services. The Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation's Annual "Taste of New York" Gala : Thursday, November 15, 2007, The Prince George Ballroom, 15 East 27th Street, New York City, NY. The Libby Ross Foundation was founded in 1999 in loving memory of Elizabeth "Libby" Ross, who lost her battle with breast cancer on July 24, 1998. Please click here for the original letter from the founders detailing their reasons for starting the Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. Lori Ross and Marla Willner started the Foundation. Both of the founders have first hand experience with breast cancer in their families. Lori lost her mother to breast cancer in 1998 and Marla's mother is a two-time survivor of the disease. The Foundation was started to prevent other women and other families from experiencing the devastation of breast cancer by focusing on creating unique support programs and to help eradicate the disease through research and early detection. The Foundation's enormous success has been a result of the many kindhearted people and companies that have donated money, products, services and time. The Foundation also has a very diverse group of individuals that have joined the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Volunteer Committee. The Libby Ross Foundation has personally touched thousands of women in the New York City area and are expanding their operations each year as their fundraising increases. After the Monotone Symphony--A Fame Theory Production : Tuesday, November 13, 2007, Esquire North Penthouse, 111 Central Park North (110th Street at Lenox Avenue), in the neighborhood of Harlem, New York City. Tatiana Platt and Campion Platt hosted "After the Monotone Symphony" , an event inspired by Yves Klein's The Monotone Symphony (March 9, 1960). The evening, A Fame Theory Production, featured bodies in blue, Chopin Vodka martinis, Moet & Chandon champagne, hors d'oeuvres by Spoonbread, fame, and truly a moment in NY art history. Tatiana and Campion toasted close friends and French artist Mr. Yves Klein who was known for his use of nude models as live paint brushes, and his famous cobalt blue. The brilliance of this exclusive cocktail party, held in the breathtaking triplex penthouse where Campion Platt had designed the great room, marked an incredible moment in art history. Joined by the famegame.com co-founders, Jose Serrano-Reyes and Seth Aylmer, nude models were painted head to toe in cobalt blue paint, and strategically positioned throughout the space to channel the artist's work. Guests were invited to sign their names to a "Declaration of Infinite Renewal", a large canvas turned into a manifesto for artistic solidarity with the help of American artist Michael Rothschild and his daughter Ana. To read more, click here. History: On a clear night in March at ten pm sharp a crowd of one hundred people, all dressed in black tie attire, came to the Galerie International d'Art Contemporain in Paris. The event was the first conceptual piece to be shown at this gallery by their new artist Mr. Yves Klein. The gallery was one of the finest in Paris. Mr. Klein in a black dinner jacket proceeded to conduct a ten piece orchestra in his personal composition of The Monotone Symphony, which he had written in 1949. This symphony consisted of one note (listen here). Three models appeared, all with very beautiful naked bodies. They were then conducted as was the full orchestra by Mr. Klein. The music began. The models then rolled themselves in the blue paint that had been placed on giant pieces of artist paper - the paper had been carefully placed on one side of the galleries' wall and floor area - opposite the full orchestra. Everything was composed so breathtakingly beautifully. The spectacle was surely a metaphysical and spiritual event for all. This went on for twenty minutes. When the symphony stopped it was followed by a strict twenty minutes of silence, in which everyone in the room willingly froze themselves in their own private meditation space. At the end of Yves' piece everyone in the audience was fully aware they had been in the presence of a genius at work, the piece was a huge success! Mr. Klein triumphed. It would be his greatest moment in art history, a total success. The spectacle had unquestionable poetic beauty, and Mr. Kleins' last words that night were, "THE MYTH IS IN ART". -M.
