22nd Annual Citymeals-on-Wheels Power Lunch for Women : NEW YORK-FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2008. 22nd Annual Citymeals-on-Wheels Power Lunch for Women at The Rainbow Room, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, 65th Floor, New York, NY. A veritable who’s who from the worlds of business, media, government, publishing and the arts filled the Rainbow Room on Friday, November 21, 2008 for the Citymeals-on-Wheels 22nd annual “Power Lunch for Women.” This by-invitation-only benefit, emceed by Diana L. Taylor, Managing Director of Wolfensohn & Company, raised $1.5 million, enough money to provide 155,763 meals for New York’s frail aged. Having read about Citymeals-on-Wheels dire financial straits in New York Magazine, Joan Tisch (wife of the late Bob Tisch) made a surprise announcement at the organization's recent Power Lunch for Women. She said, "Like you, my family shares a deep concern for the hungry and vulnerable in our city. That is why my children- Steven, Laurie and Jon- and I have decided to make a Challenge Grant of $100,000 to Citymeals in honor of Bob, a man known for his compassion and responsiveness to people in need. Bob had an abiding admiration and long association with Citymeals and I'm sure that my daughter Laurie heard his voice, when she got the family together to make this gift." With that challenge 16 people stepped up to the plate and in about 10 minutes, with the matching grant they raised, on site $430,000. Andrew Borrok, a Citymeals Board Member, wrote a check for $150,000 on the spot. When the tallies were in Citymeals raised $1.5 million …making this the largest single fundraiser in Citymeals’ history. Honored for their long-standing commitment to Citymeals and the elderly population were Martha Stewart, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. and Lynda Resnick, FIJI Water / POM Wonderful. The after-noon featured a special performance by vocalist Andrea Marcovicci and her 90 year-old mother, Helen. Among this year’s lunching ladies were Cindy Adams; Christine Baranski; Polly Bergen; Susan Blumenthal; Grace Mirabella Cahan; Mary Higgins Clark; Carmen Dell’Orefice; Michele Oka Doner; Beth Dozoretz; Patricia Duff; Nora Ephron; Dasha Epstein; Joni Evans; Florence Fabricant; Linda Fairstein; Tovah Feldshuh; Geraldine Ferraro; Stephanie French; Betsy Gotbaum; Susan Zises Green; Gael Greene; Jamee Gregory; Donna Hanover; Joan Helpern; Caroline Hirsch; Jenny Holzer; Erica Jong; Adrienne Landau; Evelyn Lauder; Alexandra Lebenthal; Cynthia Leive; Stephanie March; Julianna Margulies; Bernadette Peters; Ruth Reichl; Denise Rich; Judith Ripka; Deborah Roberts; Samantha Boardman Rosen; Candida Royalle; Liz Smith; Gloria Steinem; Joan Tisch; Laurie Tisch; Kathleen Turner; Lillian Vernon; Silda Wall; Patricia Wexler; Paula Zahn and others. One hundred percent of the money raised from ticket sales at Power Lunch, and all Citymeals’ events, goes to the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals to homebound elderly in the five boroughs of New York City. This year’s Power Lunch was hosted by the Cipriani Family and the Rainbow Room. Official sponsors of Citymeals-on-Wheels include American Airlines; FIJI Water; MasterCard; and Nespresso. “Dan Negrea Investiture as Knight of Malta” : Friday, November 14, 2008, Dan Negrea's Investiture as Knight of Malta by Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta American Association, U.S.A. at a Solemn Liturgy of Investiture Ceremony at Cathedral of St. Patrick, New York, NY. The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta (commonly known as the "Order of Malta") is a lay, religious order of the Catholic Church. The Order of Malta—one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilization—was founded in Jerusalem during the eleventh century. Members of the Order seek to glorify God through their work with the poor and the sick and their witness of the Catholic faith. The Order of Malta remains true to its inspiring principles, summarized in the motto: "Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum," defense of the Faith and assistance to the poor and the suffering, which become reality through the voluntary work carried out by the Knights and Dames in humanitarian assistance and medical and relief efforts. Today, the Order carries out these services in over 120 countries. There are approximately 12,500 Knights and Dames of Malta around the world. They belong to one of 59 national associations, priories, or sub-priories. There are three national associations in the United States—the Federal Association, based in Washington, D.C.; Malta American Association, U.S.A., based in New York; and, the Western Association, based in California. FUEL FOR TRUTH Presents Arm Yourself: Learn the Truth, Fight For Truth, Fuel For Truth : NEW YORK-NOVEMBER 12, 2008, Fuel For Truth: Arm Yourself with the Truth at Mansion New York, 530 West 28th Street, New York, NY 10001. One of New York City's hottest nightclubs, Mansion, was packed Wednesday November 12th, with over 700 of Manhattan's sexiest trendsetters to take part in "Arm Yourself: Learn the Truth, Fight For Truth, Fuel For Truth." The event marked the 10th mega-event Fuel For Truth has produced since its founding in September of 2001. "It was by far our best event to date," shouted Joe Richards, Executive Director and founding member of Fuel For Truth, over the cheers and applause at the closing of the presentation. "The people, the venue, the volunteers and most of all - the crowds' overwhelmingly positive reception to our message shows we are the best at what we do: informing and motivating cool, young people to support Israel and America in our fight against Radical Islamic terrorism." The mass of young and hot dressed to kill passed through press photographers flashing pictures of young celebrities who came to hear our important message and get a glimpse of another star attraction of the night – undefeated, NABF Champion boxer Yuri Foreman. The Jewish boxer and Fuel For Truth supporter dazzled everyone with his flamboyant entrance and superior boxing skills. Kat Guttman, Fuel For Truth’s Director of Operations and expert in Israel's hand-to-hand fighting system (Krav Maga), met Yuri center stage to hold pads for the lightning fast boxer to hit and show off his stuff. That kicked-off the nights' presentation and set the tone for a hard hitting night to remember. Three volunteer members; Jonathan Luttwak, Greg Aguele and founder and chairman Jon Loew; boldly shared alarming facts about the growing threat of Radical Islamic terrorism to an already fragile U.S. economy. Shocking photos and videos of extremist groups using oil money to foster Islamic radicalism on American campuses and businesses left the audience in an uneasay silence. At one point you could have heard a pin drop in the room of 700+ young people. Jonathan Luttwak, a former Captain in the US Army and veteran of operatiosn throughout Iraq and Kuwait took the stage. Luttwak, FFT member #107, took listeners out of the room and into the Middle East with his masterful retelling of his personal experiences as an eye witness to suicide bombings and the struggle for the hearts and minds of an entire generation of future leaders of Iraq. Luttwak explained that the same extremism attempting to hijack Iraq's future is active on American soil. He exposed the dangerous consequences of the estimated $70 billion to American universities. This money allows the Saudi's to hand pick the chairs of Middle Eastern studies departments. "Their goal is to teach their warped version of the Middle East to our best and brightest and try to bring down this country from within." Luttwak said. Jon ended with this video clip that inspired hope...and left the audience stunned in disbelief and cheering at the top of their lungs at the end. Next up was Greg Aguele, FFT member #105. The actor/athlete took the stage by storm. "My father's Italian, my mother's Jewish and I'm a damn proud supporter of Israel!" said Greg from center stage. He said of joining Fuel For Truth. "One year ago I was a regular guy who came to an event just like this and was transformed, transformed to really do something." Jon Loew, founder and chairman of Fuel For Truth, closed the presentation with his always-inspirational call to action. "When do I have to deal with this threat? Well, you don't buy a fire extinguisher after your house burns down, and you don't buy insurance on your car after you get into an accident. So what is the appropriate action? We believe we are taking steps that will change the future, and we are offering you the opportunity to do it with us." As the largest nightclub in New York City filled with the thumping music of world-famous DJRB and DJ GoodFella, the spotlight hit the center of the room where Joe Richards and Kat Guttman, the only two employees of the organization responsible for 17,000 supporters across the US, where pulling FFT's star members on stage and on top of couches to get the party started. Rachel Blumenfeld, Elan Sasson, Andrew Goldstein, Todd Ingwer, Fidel Amos, Joe Timlichman and dozens of other FFT volunteers showed how Fuel For Truth parties just as hard as they ponder. The club exploded with energy and the party lasted until early in the morning. The room was a snap shot of why Fuel For Truth fights. Dancing together were Jews and non-Jews, members of every race, every creed, people involved with Fuel For Truth since the first days after 9/11 and hour old recruits. It didn't matter. By the end of the evening we were one people, united for one cause: to fight for the Truth. MAS Annual Benefit & Presentation of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal to Kent Barwick : NEW YORK-TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2008, The Municipal Art Society (MAS) Annual Benefit & Presentation of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal to Kent Barwick. The evening began with Cocktails at The Four Seasons followed by Dinner at The Plaza of the Seagram Building: 375 Park Avenue, New York City. MAS presented its highest honor to President Kent Barwick who, after almost 40 years of service, steps down as president of MAS at year end. Kent has been the soul of the Municipal Art Society for almost four decades, leading the charge to save Grand Central, Radio City Music Hall, Lever House, St. Bartholomew’s Church, to name just a few of his accomplishments. In some of his boldest strokes, Kent stopped the plan for a massive tower that would have cast shadows across Central Park, and prevented a potentially disastrous rezoning of Times Square that would have extinguished its celebrated bright lights. He is an outspoken and passionate advocate for a magnificent new Moynihan Station, for a revitalized waterfront and, most importantly, for engaging citizens in the shaping of their city. TUESDAY'S CHILDREN "A Toast to New York Fall Gala" : NEW YORK-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2008,The Rainbow Room, 30 Rockefeller Center, New York City, NY: More than 200 members of New York’s philanthropic, business, government and civic communities gathered tonight at the sixth annual TUESDAY'S CHILDREN "A Toast to New York" benefit to honor culinary icons Drew and Tracy Nieporent of the Myriad Restaurant Group; John D. Idol, Chief Executive Office, Michael Kors (USA), Inc.; and Congressman Pete King, Ranking Member of the House Homeland Security Committee for their unwavering support of 9/11 families. The event, held at the Rainbow Room, was emceed by Carol Anne Riddell, News 4 New York anchor and reporter. Each of the honorees has contributed significantly not only to Tuesday's Children, but to the entire 9/11 community.Of special note this year was the first-ever presentation of the “Spirit of 9/11 Award” given to 13-year-old Jacob Miller, a young man who donated savings from his Bar Mitzvah to support a new international Tuesday’s Children initiative called Project Common Bond. Tuesday’s Children Board Chair David Weild IV said, “In the wake of September 11th, hundreds of different charities emerged to assist the 9/11 families. Many did good work. Some lasted a few months; some, a couple of years. But today there is only ONE group that provides the services and programs that fill the needs of the entire 9/11 community. And that group is Tuesday’s Children. “No where else can the families and rescue and recovery workers find mentoring programs, life skills training, job preparation and financial workshops, parenting programs, community service programs, ‘take our children to work day’ initiatives, and sometimes just plain old family fun events. Tuesday’s Children truly is the last man standing. Make no mistake, though, we cannot stand alone.” Congressman King, unable to attend due to work obligations, said via videoconference, “Over the past six years I have been so impressed with the great work Tuesday’s Children has done not only for the families who lost loved ones on September 11th, but for everyone impacted by the unspeakable events of 9/11.” Tonight’s honorees join past Leadership Award recipients Katie Couric, New York Giants Hall-of-Famer the late Dick Lynch, Governor George Pataki, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the New York Mets, The NYPD, FDNY and The Port Authority Police Department. Tuesday’s Children also presented 13-year-old Jacob Miller with the first-annual “Spirit of 9/11 Award.” Jacob generously donated savings from his Bar Mitzvah to help support Project Common Bond. This unique annual program brings together teens from around the world who have lost an immediate family member to an act of terrorism. Working with the professionals at Tuesday’s Children, these young people have formed a community of peers that is working to forge a role so they can contribute to the international dialogue about terrorism, peace, meaningful community service and other issues that impact their lives. Through Project Common Bond they are finding ways to build a better – safer – and more tolerant world. Food Network's New York City Wine and Food Festival Dinner at MACELLERIA with SUZY SIRLOIN : Thursday, October 9, 2008, MACELLERIA Restaurant, A Rustic Italian Steakhouse, 48 Gansevoort Street, Meatpacking District, New York City, NY (Reservations: 212-741-2555) Food Network's New York City Wine and Food Festival Dinner at Macelleria: Buy it Cold and Serve It Up Hot Baby! Featuring a presentation by "Suzy Sirloin" of Strassburger Meats. Chef/Owner Sergio Bitici presented a four course dinner paired with spirits from Southern Wine and Spirits of New York. Editorial Note: NYC Consigliere and Manhattan Society.com Editor & Founder, Christopher London, says: “there are several reasons why Macelleria is not just one of my favorite places to enjoy steak in New York City but also one of my favorite places to truly enjoy a meal and an evening out in my hometown. Growing up in a multicultural household of Spanish, Italian, German and Austrian heritage, from a long line of old world foodies, we celebrated the art of food preparation in my home. When I was not enjoying my mom’s, my father’s or my grandmother’s home cooking we were appropriately selective about where we chose to eat out. You can always feel the soul of a restaurant when there is the full force of a family that has a passion for food and respect of the customer. The vision and meticulous art of Chef/Owner Sergio Bitici is very much on display from the appetizers to the deliberate preparation of the entrée but you feel the force of a family behind Macelleria. Steak is my first passion. It is simply what I enjoy to eat most when I am dining out, Bitici does not disappoint. Steak at Macelleria is always perfectly prepared, using the finest cuts of meat, to my specification which usually means rare on the inside and well browned and crispy on the surface. Whether on a date, networking or business dinner, with someone who happens to be a vegetarian, non-meat selections are also excellent. Macelleria is a place for carnivores and vegetarians alike. The full bar is also second to none relative to New York City steakhouses.” Media Contact: Josephine Zohny | e-mail: josiezohny@aol.com PHOTO CREDIT: Copyright © 2008 Manhattan Society.com by Gregory Partanio |tel:718.614.7740 | e-mail: PrinceGregory@manhattansociety.com

Fifth Annual "Fete de Swifty" to benefit The Family Justice Center Initiative of The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City : Thursday, September 18, 2008, 73rd Street between Lexington & 3rd Avenue(in a tent outside of Swifty's Restaurant), New York City, NY. Fifth Annual "Fete de Swifty" to benefit The Family Justice Center Initiative of The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. Honorary Chairs: Nicole Kidman, Calvin Klein, and Mariska Hargitay Co-Chairs: Bloomberg LP, John K. Castle, The Estee Lauder Companies, Inc., Geller & Company, Henry & Marie Josee-Kravis, Cynthia & Dan Lufkin, Sir Evelyn & Lynn Forester de Rothschild, Quadrangle Group, LLC, Tishman Speyer. Associate Chairs: Jake Bright, Rory Hermelee, Elizabeth Meigher, Alison Minton, Elisabeth & Matt Mitchell, Liz Walker. The City's first Family Justice Center opened in Brooklyn in 2005 to help victims of domestic violence by offering an array of services under one roof. This innovative program, which is reliant on both public and private support, enables victims to meet with a prosecutor, speak with a trained counselor, and apply for housing and financial assistance in just one visit- all in their native language while their children play safely in the next room. By providing services in one location with partnering City agencies and community providers, the center has increased the effectiveness of service delivery to break the cycle of domestic violence. To date, the Brooklyn Center has served more than 10,000 domestic violence victims and their nearly 2,700 children. Based on its success, Mayor Mike Bloomberg committed to opening additional centers, beginning with a Queens center scheduled to open this summer and one in the Bronx shortly thereafter. Rose Garden Dinner Dance at The New York Botanical Garden : Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 6 PM, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx River Parkway at Fordham Road, Bronx, NY 10458-5126. The Rose Garden Dinner Dance celebrates the beauty of the rose and the Garden’s stunning display in its autumn bloom. The evening began with cocktails in the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, followed by dinner and dancing in the Garden Terrace Room. Chairmen of the Rose Garden Dinner Dance are Jean and Harry Burn and Dotty and Lionel Goldfrank. Honorary Chairmen are Sharen and James Benenson and Anne and Thomas Hubbard. This year the NYBG is proud to honor Eliot and Roly Nolen, whose long-standing support of horticulture, plant science, and education has benefited the Botanical Garden in myriad ways for nearly a quarter of a century. Their dedication has touched every corner of this 250-acre site and affected the success of many exhibition and programmatic endeavors. Most visibly, they provided a significant leadership gift toward the construction of the state-of-the-art Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections, the largest behind-the-scenes glasshouses for plants at any botanical garden in the nation. In addition, this year’s event commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, which now features more than 3,000 plants and 600 varieties of roses. Brand-new beds of floribundas grace the center aisle, providing an interesting range of heights. Spectacular new varieties add depth to the collections that were started last year. Along the back border new Delbards and Barneys, which have never been available in the United States before, are now on view. Drift roses from France and Veranda roses from Germany add to the international diversity of specimens. The event proceeds help to maintain and build the Rose Garden collection, and support the curators’ continued care and development of one of the world’s premier rose venues. This event attracts approximately 350 members of the Garden’s extended family, and raises more than $600,000 to support the collection. Gwyneth Paltrow & Steven Klein literally hid from the guests, had their enablers block members of the press from taking photos and having other VIP guests from getting anywhere near them. After less than an hour Gwyneth finally made a hasty exit to go party with Mariah Carey. This might lead one to conclude that perhaps those with iconclastic xenophobic, narcissistic tendencies should reconsider hosting philanthropic events. Or in the alternative just tell the media in advance that they will only "strike a pose" for Vogue and only their pre-arranged photographer(s)will be given a photo op. Co-Chairs: Kelly Klein, Sale Johnson & Marcy Warren were gracious to the media as were other VIP Guests who made themselves available to be photographed. A beautiful forum was wasted for an evening which was confusing to many and led to an early exodus by many guests who seemed disappointed to have paid $500-2500. Under these circumstances not even the best efforts of publicist extraordinaire, Linda Shapiro, could insure favorable coverage. Several guests were overheard grumbling that this was the "worst event" that they had attended in the Hamptons. It is unfortunate as the human love for preserving the health, safety and well being of God's creatures is a high calling and a worthwhile cause to support. The cause of Christine Barrett DiStefano and Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue is a most worthwhile one and I recommend that those who view my site learn about their good works. It is unfortunate when the illusiveness and general unavailability of the hosts of the event for even a reasonable photo op, made the event a circus, frustrating and a disappointment to those who tried only to cover and document a seemingly worthwhile event in a tasteful manner. A word of caution to those who focus their philanthropic efforts around accomodating the whims of iconclastic xenophobes, making them the "hosts" or centerpieces of charitable events, you risk undermining how the public perceives the importance and significance of the cause. Philanthropic Poseurs are certain celebrities who seem more hell bent on cutting deals with Wire Services to perpetuate the legend of their philanthropic good deeds so it makes news around the world while local journalists and guests are "stiffed."
