ABOUT: The Guardian Angels is an organization that believes in and works synergistically with local authorities in providing peaceful solutions to safeguard neighborhoods, schools and cyberspace from bullying, gangs, and violence. Empowering individuals, especially at-risk youth, to prioritize academic achievement and become role models for their peers is a critical component of the organization’s mission.
The Guardian Angels programs do make a difference. Their unarmed safety patrols, readily recognizable with red berets and jackets, deter crime on streets and subways. Guardian Angels youth programs teach personal safety, online safety, civic contribution, and inclusion. Messages focus on alternatives to gangs, making good decisions, conflict resolution, and sticking up for one another.
FOUNDING:The organization was founded by
Curtis Sliwa in 1979 and originally called the
"Magnificent 13", a group dedicated to combating violence and crime on the New York City subways. At the time, the city was experiencing a crime wave. The Magnificent 13 grew and was renamed the
Guardian Angels. The group's actions drew strong reactions, both positive and negative, from the police, public officials, residents and the media. The group’s distinctive uniform, a military type red beret and white insignia t-shirt, is now however uniformly recognized as a symbol of safety and security bringing comfort to residents and local business, community and political leaders around the world. Today the organization, led by
Curtis Sliwa (Founder & Director) and his wife
Mary Sliwa (Chief Operating Officer/Executive Director), is nine countries and 82 cities around the world, with approximately 5,000 members.
