NEW YORK-JUNE 22: The National Urban Technology Center’s 2010 Gala Dinner on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel , 80 Columbus Circle at 60th Street, New York City, NY. The Gala Benefit celebrated 16 years of preparing minds for the possibilities of the future and paid a special tribute to Ambassador Carl Spielvogel with the Lifetime of Public Service Award. He has been involved in numerous national and international civic, cultural, governmental and educational organizations. Ms. Patti LaBelle, celebrated singer, songwriter, actress and author was presented with The Humanitarian Award. Introducing Ambassador Spielvogel was New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Dr. Louis Sullivan , former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services presented Ms. LaBelle with her award. B. Smith, style icon, author and Founder/Chief Creative Officer, B. Smith Enterprises, LTD. served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening with Maurice DuBois, CBS News Anchor delivering the welcoming remarks. Over 300 corporate and community leaders joined Honorary Chairs: Senator Thomas Daschle, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Charles Schumer, Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. and Hugh Price in support of the vital Urban Tech mission. Special guests also in attendance included New York Knicks legend now entrepreneur and philanthropist, John Starks, actor Richard Kind and Arianna Huffington. Urban Tech, founded in 1995 connects students and families in under-served communities, to digital literacy, comprehensive health education and life skills that are critical to academic success. Proceeds from the gala will expand our “Adopt-a-School Program", offering individuals and corporations the opportunity to personally connect with schools and have a significant impact on the education of our youth!
