ABOUT: The Rockefeller University Hospital was the first facility for patient-oriented research in the country when it opened in 1910. Its mission—a revolutionary idea at the time—was to link laboratory research to the bedside diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. With this guiding philosophy, the Hospital’s physician-scientists continue to transform modern medicine, as well as to provide innovative and free-of-charge patient care. Their many accomplishments include the: (i) Discovery that DNA is the substance of heredity (ii) Demonstration that a virus can cause cancer (iii) Development of the first "drug cocktail" therapy to extend life expectancy for HIV/AIDS patients (iv) Confirmation of the connection between cholesterol and heart disease (v) Discovery of blood types and ways to preserve blood, making blood banks possible (vi) Discovery of an obesity gene and a weight-regulating hormone, leptin (vii) Development of a methadone treatment to manage heroin addiction.
The Rockefeller University is a world-renowned center for research and graduate education in the biomedical sciences, chemistry, and physics. The University was founded by
John D. Rockefeller in 1901 as the nation’s first institute for medical research. To date, 23 scientists associated with the University have received the Nobel Prize, 20 have been awarded the Albert Lasker Award, and 14 have garnered the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest honor.
