More than 300 women -- leaders of industry, media, government, and the arts - attended the Citymeals-on-Wheels 25th annual “Power Lunch for Women” at The Pierre on Friday, November 18, 2011. This by-invitation-only benefit, emceed by Paula Zahn raised enough money to provide more than 175,000 meals for New York’s frail homebound aged.
Honored for her almost 30 years of service as Citymeals-on-Wheels' Founding Director was Marcia Stein. Stein stepped down in September and is now an Adjunct Professor, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. Also honored for its generous support of Citymeals-on-Wheels will be Travelers Insurance.
In a moving tribute to the plight of NYC’s homebound elderly, Brooke Shields, Kristin Chenoweth and Jan Maxwell provided poignant readings from letters written by Citymeals’ recipients.
Among this year’s lunching ladies include Donatella Arpaia, Christine Baranski, Pamela Baxter, Samantha Boardman, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Bobbi Brown, Juju Chang, Mary Higgins Clark, Dana Cowin, Laura Day, Michele Oka Doner, Patricia Duff, Dasha Epstein, Linda Fairstein, Betsy Gotbaum, Gael Greene, Jamee Gregory, Donna Hanover, Joan Helpern, Caroline Hirsch, Dana Ivey, Gayle King, Rikki Klieman, Jessica Lappin, Barbara Lazaroff, Alexandra Lebenthal, Sandra Lee, Stephanie March, Zarela Martinez, Margo MacNabb Nederlander, Ruth Reichl, Denise Rich, Deborah Roberts, Betty Rollin, Diane Sawyer, Shari Scharfer-Rollins, Christina Steinbrenner, Gloria Steinem, Emily Sussman, Diana L. Taylor, Lizzie Tisch, Barbara Tober, Susan Ungaro, Lillian Vernon, and Patricia Wexler, among others.
A few adventurous men buy the privilege of lunching with these powerful and famous women for an admission price of $10,000. This year’s “$10K Men” include Joseph M. Cohen, William Deutsch, Bill Fischer, Bobby Flay, Robert Grimes, Michael Lynne, Craig Pfeiffer, John Pomerantz, Dennis Riese, John Shapiro, William T. Speck, MD, Myron Stein, Jonathan Tisch, Donald Tober, John Zaccaro and Steven B. Zavagli.
One hundred percent of the money raised from ticket and auction sales at Power Lunch, and all Citymeals-on-Wheels events, goes to the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals to homebound elderly in the five boroughs of New York City.
