On Wednesday, September 21, 2011,
Music Director Alan Gilbert and the
New York Philharmonic ushered in its 170th season with an Opening Night Gala Concert at Avery Fisher Hall. The evening raised more than $2.6 million for the
New York Philharmonic.
Daria L. Foster and Klara and
Larry A. Silverstein were the Gala Co-Chairmen.
The evening featured a spectacular performance by soprano
Deborah Voigt who sang "Dich, teure Halle" from Wagner's Tannhäuser, Barber's Andromache's Farewell and the Final Scene from
R. Strauss's Salome.
Alan Gilbert, Deborah Voigt, and the
New York Philharmonic received a standing ovation from the audience at Avery Fisher Hall following the conclusion of the last work on the program — the dramatic Final Scene from Salome.
The Opening Night Gala was presented by
Breguet. The Gala was generously underwritten by
BNY Mellon, Credit Suisse, J. Christopher Flowers, Daria L. Foster, Didi and Oscar Schafer, and Klara and Larry A. Silverstein.
