NEW YORK, NY New York, NY — UJA-Federation of New York’s newly formed Downtown Division launched its first annual downtown event — Party On Top of the World With Fun, Food, and Philanthropy — on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at 7 World Trade Center in New York City.
The division, geared toward New Yorkers living or working downtown, hopes to engage the downtown community with UJA-Federation by educating participants about the organization’s work at an annual event and through volunteer opportunities, briefings, and site visits.
At the event, volunteer booths were set up offering attendees the opportunity to sign up for four different projects to give back to the downtown community. The volunteer opportunities included spring planting at senior residences, donating and reading books to children, helping a fellow New Yorker sharpen job search and interview skills, and serving lunch and enjoying an afternoon with seniors on the Lower East Side.
“Tonight is about the future of downtown, as well as the future of UJA-Federation,” said Lisa Silverstein, chair of the Downtown Division. “The only way to realize the potential of a community is to make the effort, to pull people together, and to lead. If you educate people as to the needs in their community, most who can contribute will.”
Several of UJA-Federation beneficiary agencies in the downtown community were highlighted at the event, including the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, the Educational Alliance, F•E•G•S Health and Human Service System, and United Jewish Council of the East Side.
Also on the event committee were Ari Ackerman, Haley and Jason Binn, Ramona Brodsky, Abby Levin Brody, Marjorie Aaron Chazan, Marc Chodock, Emily Frances, Tracie Golding, Lauren Hanin, Karen Kulvin, Abby Levy, Jill Meltz, Kerry Miller, Jonathan Minsker, Jenny Selvers, Jodi Smith, Molly Snyder, and Alan and Jill Swerdloff.
