New York Philharmonic Spring Gala 2014

On Wednesday, March 5, the New York Philharmonic hosted its Spring Gala benefit with a staged performance of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 320 guests attended and nearly $1.2 million was raised for the Philharmonic. The Gala was presented by BNY Mellon, and the concert was made possible with generous support from Perry and Marty Granoff, Mary Jo and Ted Shen, and an anonymous donor. The Gala was underwritten by the J.C. Flowers Foundation, Daria L. and Eric J. Wallach, and the Mary and James G. Wallach Foundation.
Sweeney Todd stars bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett in her Philharmonic debut, New York stage debut, and first time performing the role. Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts, Lonny Price is the director, and Lonny Price and Matt Cowart are the producers.
In attendance for the evening’s festivities were Honorary Gala Chairmen Stephen Sondheim, Neil Patrick Harris, and Bernadette Peters and Gala Co-Chairmen Mr. and Mrs. J. Christopher Flowers. Also attending the Gala were Governor Andrew Cuomo and Sandra Lee, Chairman Gary W. Parr, Executive Director Matthew VanBesien and Rosie Jowitt, Music Director Alan Gilbert, Emma Thompson, Bryn Terfel, Daria L. and Eric J. Wallach, Mary Wallach, Marty and Perry Granoff, Mary Jo and Ted Shen, Roger Berlind, Jamie Bernstein, Alexander Bernstein, Noreen and Kenneth Buckfire, Toos and Hira Daruvala, Sharon and Larry Hite, Karen T. LeFrak, Peter W. May, Phyllis and Slade Mills, Karen and David Peetz, Joel I. and Joan Picket, Susan and Elihu Rose, Bill Rudin, Carol and Chuck Schaefer, Nina Bernstein Simmons, Daisy Soros, Christie and Ronald J. Ulrich, and Sandra and Stan Warshawsky.
Guests of the Spring Gala attended an hour-long cocktail reception on the Grand Promenade, followed by the performance and a post-concert dinner, also held on the Grand Promenade.
Restaurant Associates catered the event and décor to complement the evening’s festivities was provided by Van Vliet & Trap, LLC.
