NEW YORK - APRIL 18: HEALTHCORPS’ Sixth Annual Gala “Garden of Angels” Honoring Diane Sawyer & Matthew Modine on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, 301 Park Avenue, New York City, NY 10022
HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org) took its fight against child obesity to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for its Sixth Annual Gala, “Garden of Angels,” where they honored ABC News Anchor Diane Sawyer and actor, producer and philanthropist Matthew Modine for their contributions to the health and well-being of American youth. Co-Founders of HealthCorps®, Dr. Mehmet Oz, heart surgeon and Emmy® Award-winning talk show host, and his wife Lisa Oz, served as the event Co-Chairs. Dr. Mehmet Oz served as master of ceremonies.
In addition to Dr. Oz and Lisa Oz, HealthCorps supporters who attended were: Actor Ben Vereen, Talk Show host Montel Williams, Actor/Author and new HealthCorps Ambassador Alejandro Chaban, “Detachment” star Betty Kaye, “The Chew” Co-host Daphne Oz, “The Chew” Co-host Carla Hall, Chef and Author Rocco DiSpirito, “CBS This Morning” Anchor Gayle King, Actor/Rapper Ice T and his wife Model/Actress Coco, Actress Anna George of USA Network’s “Royal Pains,” Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, Miss Teen USA Danielle Doty, CBS Medical Correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook, KKR’s John Mack, ESPN Anchor Jesse Palmer and Model/Actor Adam Senn, among others.
“Garden of Angels” guests were treated to special performances by R&B/Pop artist Shontelle, dance music legends TKA, an original song and dance performance by Broadway actor Stepp Stewart, a dance routine by "the boy band of dance" ICONic Boyz, as well as music from 15-year-old jazz pianist Rocco Fiorentino and the crowd-pleasing Eturnity Band.
Proceeds raised at the Gala were used to establish HealthCorps' mentoring program in additional high schools across the country and launch new initiatives, including “HealthCorps University” to educate teachers nationwide on the program’s nutrition, fitness and mental strength curriculum.
